Electric vehicles (EVs) expansion has the potential to pave the path for Sri Lanka to achieve multiple objectives around import expenditure, the transportation sector and renewable energy goals. Despite growing EV imports and demand, current policy landscape remains fragmented, with weak coordination across EV import regulations, financing, public transport electrification, charging infrastructure and solar energy integration.
Adopting a mixed-method approach, this study evaluates Sri Lanka’s electric mobility ecosystem through an integrated lens to understand the potential for cross-sectoral collaborations, synergies, competition, overlaps and contradictions across Sri Lanka’s EV import policy, EVs in public transportation, EV charging infrastructure and rooftop solar energy.
