Kanchana is an Economist by training, with research interests in environmental and natural resource economics, agricultural economics, and poverty analysis.
She won the First Prize for the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) in the Global Development Awards and Medals Competition of the Global Development Network (GDN) in 2014. She also received the Presidential Award for Scientific Publication for her work published in the WHO Health Bulletin.
Kanchana is the recipient of the Top Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) in Sri Lanka Award 2014 for Personal Accomplishment, by the Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka.
Kanchana holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Agriculture (Specialized in Agricultural Economics) from the University of Peradeniya, and Masters in Economics with a Distinction Pass from the University of Colombo. She has also obtained a Post-graduate Diploma in “Universalzing Socio-Economic Secturity for the Poor” from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. Kanchana is a research grantee of the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE).
