Implementing the Economic Governance Index (EGI) in Sri Lanka

Thematic Area: Macro, Trade, & Economic Growth

The Economic Governance Index (EGI) aims to equip government bodies, businesses, and various stakeholders with a nuanced understanding of economic governance, facilitating the development and implementation of reforms that tackle business challenges while promoting local economic development. The EGI survey will collect data from approximately 2500 – 2700 enterprises, encompassing Small, Micro, Medium, and Informal sectors across all 25 districts in Sri Lanka. This data will provide impactful evidence to identify policy and operational gaps to improve the policy and regulatory environment at subnational levels.

The project, aligned with the “Strengthening Governance in Sri Lanka” programme by the Asia Foundation, intends to enhance the effectiveness, inclusivity, resilience, and accountability of Sri Lanka’s subnational governance systems. By surveying MSME and informal sector firms, the EGI will assist national and subnational governments in identifying effective policy and administrative changes by comparing the opportunities and constraints associated with the economic governance of provinces and districts.
