15 April 2020
Speaking on Newsline programme, broadcast over TV1 on 15 April 2020, IPS Research Fellow and Head of Migration and Urbanisation research, Bilesha Weeraratne, discussed the impact of COVID19 pandemic on Sri Lanka’s migrant remittances and the country’s deepening foreign exchange concerns. She noted that the travel restrictions imposed by countries of destination, as well as shrinking economies in these countries, will mean that there will be a significant contraction of foreign remittances to Sri Lanka in the coming months.
“It will be a challenging ride,” Dr. Weeraratne said of Sri Lanka’s future economic growth.
