Bilesha Weeraratne Discusses Evolution of Sri Lanka’s Labour Migration

Speaking on Biz In Focus programme, broadcast over TV1 on 30 July 2019, IPS Research Fellow and Head of Migration and Urbanisation research, Bilesha Weeraratne, discussed how labour migration patterns have changed over the years. She highlighted the difference between skilled migrants and low-skilled migrants and each group’s impact on the economy. Dr. Weeraratne further noted issues such as mismanagement of remittances among migrant households, the lack of job opportunities in Sri Lanka, and the threat of human-labour being replaced by robots in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
