South Asian Coalition for reducing the consumption of SSBs

Thematic Area: Human Resource Development

Start Date: November 1, 2024

Unhealthy eating habits are a significant risk factor for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The dietary patterns in the South Asian Region have undergone drastic changes due to the evolving food environment. One unhealthy dietary pattern that has garnered attention and concern is the increasing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Consumption of SSBs has been linked to several health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental cavities. Understanding the prevalence of SSB consumption in South Asia is crucial for developing effective public health interventions and policies. The main objective is to reduce SSB consumption in the South Asian region. The study will focus on an in-depth examination of four key countries in South Asia: Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
