
World Consumer Rights Day Forum
The World Consumer Rights Day Forum took place on the 15th March at the IPS Auditorium. The Forum was jointly organized by the IPS and Federation of Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and was sponsored by “Socio-Economic Development for Conflict Affected Communities of North and East Sri Lanka” Project funded by EU and Implemented by Oxfam GB.
Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of the IPS, delivered the Welcome and Introductory Remarks followed by Kumar Mallimarchchi, President, FCCISL. Dr. Wickrema Weerasooriya, former Secretary to the Ministry of Plan Implementation, delivered the keynote address and stated that the best protection for consumers would come from the rigorous implementation of ‘Section 30’ of the Consumer Protection Act.
Dr. Dayanath Jayasuriya, P.C., Former Chairman and Director General Securities and Exchange Commission made a presentation on ‘Challenges of Consumer Protection in Sri Lanka’, while Raveen Ekanayake, Research Assistant, IPS made a presentation on ‘Safeguarding Consumer Interests Towards Safer Food in Sri Lanka’.
Dhamitha Kumarasinghe, Director General, Public Utility Commission made a presentation on ‘Utility Pricing and the Consumer’ while Kanthaiya Mutukumar, President, Marraillupai/Rambaikulam Agro-Development Cooperative Society made a presentation on ‘Farmer as a Consumer and his/her Rights’. Wrap-up Comments and Concluding Remarks were made by Anushka Wijesinha, Research Economist, IPS and Nalin Attygalle,Secretary General, FCCISL delivered the Vote of Thanks.
