30 June 2022

IPS Research Economist Sunimalee Madurawala, speaking at the 7th Annual Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH) Academy Week Research Conference 2022, highlighted the need for better fiscal policies and regulations to promote healthy diets in Sri Lanka.

The hybrid conference was organised by the Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy and co-hosted by the Southern Africa Food Lab (SAFL), African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), African Nutrition Society and Food Environment Research Network (FERN).

Presenting the poster on ‘Ideas, Institutions and Power Dynamics: The Political Economy of Fiscal Policies and Regulations to Promote Healthy Diets in Sri Lanka’ at the conference, Sunimalee further highlighted the need to adopt a more holistic and cohesive approach to promoting healthy diets. This includes generating the political will at the highest levels of government and creating awareness to reap the maximum benefits from fiscal policies. The poster was based on the IPS study on ‘Strengthening Fiscal Policies and Regulations to Promote Healthy Diets in Sri Lanka’, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.
