Stakeholder Meeting on Developing Research Agenda on Migration and Development

With aim of developing research agenda on Migration and Development , the IPS organized a stakeholder meeting on September 23, 2014 at the 2nd Floor IPS Conference Room to prioritize research themes and issues to better cater to development priorities and policy requirements of Sri Lanka. Chairman IPS, Prof. W. D. Lakshman chaired the meeting while Dr. Dushni Weerakoon, Deputy Director briefed the participants on prominence given to Migration within the IPS medium term research programme. Dr. Bilesha Weeratne, Research Economist, presented the draft Migration and Development agenda which covered: 1) international migration, 2) internal migration, and 3) urbanization to improve policy relevance and linkages.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Ministry of Economic Development, University of Colombo, World Bank, International Labor Organization,  International Organization for Migration, UN  HABBITAT and select IPS researchers working in this field. The meeting was organized as part of the ongoing MED_MIG project supported by the Think Tank Initiative (TTI).
