Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on ‘Non-Tariff Measures in Sri Lanka’, at the Union Ballroom
A Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on ‘Non-Tariff Measures in Sri Lanka’ was held on 22nd November 2010 at the Hilton Colombo Residence, Colombo. It was jointly organized by the IPS and the International Trade Center (ITC), Geneva. Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of the IPS and Willem Van der Geest, Officer – in – Charge of Division of Market Development of ITC made the opening remarks at the Meeting.
ITC implemented a company survey on NTMs in Sri Lanka in 2010. The Sri Lankan survey identified at sector and partner country-level the key obstacles that the business sector faces when complying with NTMs. Thus the objective of the meeting was to discuss the survey results with key stakeholders, including representatives of various ministries, the private sector, trade support institutions, government agencies, and academics. The other objective of the Consulatation was to provide an in-depth analysis of the survey results, in order to discuss and identify concrete actions that have to be taken in key export and import sectors of Sri Lanka.
Presentations at the meeting were made by Mondher Mimouni, Carolin Averbeck, Poonam Mohun, Shyam Kumar Gujadhur of the ITC, Kenza Le Mentec from the WTO, and Nihal De Silva from Lanka Market Research Bureau. A round table discussion too was held after the main sessions. A large number of participants from government agencies, the private sector and the academia participated in the Conference.
