Sri Lanka Ceramics and Glass Council 10th AGM

IPS Research Economist Anushka Wijesinha was the Key Note Speaker at the 10th AGM of the Sri Lanka Ceramics and Glass Council where he spoke on the topic ‘Clarity or Confusion?: The Global Economy and Sri Lanka’. Minister for Technology and Research, Hon. Patali Champika Ranawaka was the Chief Guest at this event.

To an audience comprising of leaders in the ceramics and glass industry in Sri Lanka, Wijesinha provided a concise overview of the prospects for the global economy, taking a medium-term, strategic view. In his presentation, he looked at growth drivers and constraints in the US, EU, and emerging economies of India and China, and what implications they hold for Sri Lanka. He also spoke on the need for Sri Lanka to get more aggressive on its export strategy, and take cognizance of the new emerging global middle class in emerging economies which could provide new markets for the country’s exports. He ended with a review of ‘megatrends to watch’, from the unfolding youth unemployment problem facing recession-hit Europe, to the changing global energy dynamics with the US making advancements in ‘fracking’ of domestic shale oil.

President of the Council, Mr. Mahendra Jayasekera, Managing Director of Lanka Walltiles PLC, also spoke at the event.
