Public Lecture on ‘Sri Lanka in a Changing Global Economic Landscape’

Anushka Wijesinha, Research Economist, IPS, gave a Public Lecture titled ‘Sri Lanka in a Changing Global Economic Landscape’ at the American Centre in Colombo on Thursday 22nd September 2011.

Anushka Wijesinha’s talk centered around the evolving global economic power balance, the prospects and challenges for growth in Asia, including the ‘Asian Giants’ India and China, opportunities emerging in South Asia, why the Western developed economies, especially countries like America and Germany will preserve their preeminent position despite their current economic fragility, and current challenges in global economic governance. The talk concluded with comments on how Sri Lanka needs to take a strategic view with regards to its foreign policy to effectively navigate amidst these changing dynamics.

Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, former Director Economic Affairs of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, and Dr. Anura Ekanayake, immediate past Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and IPS Governing Board member, were panelists at the talk.

The audience included government officials, private sector leaders, members of the Sri Lankan and foreign diplomatic communities, representatives of multilateral development organizations, academics and researchers.
