Sri Lanka has a visibly high rate of urbanization. Nonetheless, the latest official statistics overestimates urban population and under estimates rural population. In an effort to reconcile the mismatch between actual numbers and official estimates of urban population in a previous project the author developed an alternative definition for urbanization in Sri Lanka. Based on this alternative definition and publicly available GN level data of the Department of Census and Statistics of Sri Lanka, this project develops separate profiles of urban and rural populations in terms of the population and household level characteristics.
