Priyanka Jayawardena Speaks at the 7th ANH Academy Week Research Conference

IPS Research Economist Priyanka Jayawardena spoke on the ‘Impact of traffic light labelling (TLL) on sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) choices’ at the 7th Annual Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH) Academy Week Research Conference 2022 held from 28-30 June 2022. Her presentation at the thematic session on ‘Food system governance, policy and legislation’ was based on emerging findings from the IPS study on ‘Strengthening Fiscal Policies and Regulations to Promote Healthy Diets in Sri Lanka’, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.

Priyanka highlighted that providing information on the sugar content of beverages using TLL helps consumers make informed choices. Affordable prices too promote healthy SSB choices. She further pointed out that awareness of TLL is not uniform across population groups, and as such, greater awareness of labelling can improve the food environment in Sri Lanka.
