Presentation – Insurance as a Solution to Human-Elephant Conflict by Ruwan Samaraweera
2 March 2021
Ruwan Samaraweera, Research Officer at the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) presented his research findings on how insurance can help mitigate the effects of the human-elephant conflict (HEC) at an IPS in-house seminar held virtually on 2 March 2021.
The HEC is one of the most pressing environmental issues in Sri Lanka with significant social and political implications. Several measures have been adopted to protect elephants and address the conflict but none of the mitigation measures have proved successful due to various shortcomings. As the foremost market-based solution for managing various types of risks, insurance has a major role to play to mitigate the impact of the HEC.
