Nutrition Labels Lead Consumers Towards Healthier Food Choices – Priyanka Jayawardena
24 March 2022
Providing nutritional information on food products can lead consumers towards healthier choices, said IPS Research Economist Priyanka Jayawardena presenting at the Bi-Annual Gathering of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network (SBN). The SBN is a dedicated global platform for business and nutrition that aims to reduce malnutrition in all its forms – by engaging and supporting businesses to act, invest and innovate to improve nutrition.
Priyanka’s presentation was on the ‘Impact of traffic light labelling (TLL) on sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) choices in Sri Lanka’. She presented compelling evidence in favour of TLL labels. She further revealed that awareness of TLL is not uniform across population groups and requires awareness-raising of the TLL system to promote healthy food choices. The presentation was based on emerging findings from the IPS study ‘Strengthening Fiscal Policies and Regulations to Promote Healthy Diets in Sri Lanka’ funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. It was held at Hilton Colombo Residences.
