The project intends to establish a sui generis registration-based national system for Geographical Indications (GI). The study has selected two pilot projects – black pepper and pineapple – to introduce GI system for agriculture crops in Sri Lanka. Further, roadmaps for two pilot GI value chains will be developed with the support of the local and international experts and the stakeholders. Moreover, the study intends to build the capacities of the Government of Sri Lanka and relevant stakeholders to operate the national GI system through several trainings, workshops and outreach activities. Dilani Hirimuthugodage is working as a value chain, traceability and marketing specialist in this study with the legal specialist and an FAO consultant.
