Kithmina Hewage Discusses Sri Lanka’s Economic Challenges

IPS Research Economist Kithmina Hewage participated in a discussion on Sri Lanka’s state of the economy and expectations for the 2021 budget on ‘Face The Nation’ programme of 05 October. Mr. Hewage highlighted the importance of prioritising a successful public health response to COVID-19 to kickstart domestic economic activity and underscored the necessity for fiscal discipline and prudent policies to manage the country’s unprecedented level of debt obligations. Mr. Hewage also discussed the role of policy instability and high tariff regimes in disincentivising efficiency-seeking foreign direct investment (FDI) in Sri Lanka and its impact on export revenue.
