Kanchana Wickramasinghe Speaks at the BIMSTEC Think Tank Dialogue on Regional Security
13 – 14 November 2018
New Delhi, India
IPS Research Economist, Kanchana Wickramasinghe, highlighted that effective regional collaboration in the area of disaster management can bring in substantial benefits to increase disaster resilience in BIMSTEC countries.
The region is highly vulnerable to natural disasters and also to the increasing impacts of global climate change. While national efforts on disaster management are crucial in increasing resilience, regional collaboration can further strengthen such efforts. Ms. Wickramasinghe pointed out that there is substantial room for regional efforts in specific areas such as disaster forecasting and countries can learn lessons on implementing important aspects of disaster management, such as loss and damage assessments and climate insurance, from each other.
She was a panelist in the technical session on disaster management at the Dialogue of BIMSTEC Think Tanks on Regional Security, conducted at the Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi, India on 13 – 14 November 2018.
