Kanchana Wickramasinghe Highlights Importance of Disaster Education
16 – 18 December 2018
Chengdu, China
Disaster education can play an imperative role in promoting disaster resilience, pointed out IPS Research Economist, Kanchana Wickramasinghe, recently. Though there have been developments in education and awareness aspects of disaster risk reduction in Sri Lanka, still there are areas which need improvements. Gaps exist in generating relevant information, creating awareness, and educating communities in responding to disaster warnings. Ms. Wickramasinghe further highlighted the role of higher education institutes and research institutes in generating important research-based information, which are vital in policy making.
She made these remarks while making a presentation at the Sub-forum for Disaster Risk Reduction of the Belt and Road Forum for Education Cooperation in 2018, held in Chengdu, China from 16 – 18 December 2018. The event was co-hosted by the Sichuan University, China and Chengdu Belt and Road Research Center for Education Collaborative Innovation
