
Job Creation in Manufacturing Sector: Strategy for Sustainable Economic Growth in South Asia

IPS Executive Director, Dr. Saman Kelegama and Research Assistant, Vishvanathan Subramaniam participated in a workshop on “Job Creation in Manufacturing Sector: Strategy for Sustainable Economic Growth in South Asia” held in New Delhi on the 5th of December. The workshop was co-organized by the South Asia Center for Policy Studies (SACEPS), Research, and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) with funding provided by the Asia Foundation (India).
Deliberations during panel discussions focused upon the emerging trends in the macroeconomic performance of South Asian countries, specifically on issues pertaining to employment generation and the performance of the manufacturing sector. Furthermore, panelists elucidated upon the industrial, trade and macroeconomics policies that require additional focus in order to shape the competitiveness and employment generation capacity of the manufacturing sector. Panelists also provided perspectives on South Asia’s ability to achieve sustainable economic growth in the context of manufacturing and exports, through the use of global value chains and increased regional cooperation.
