IPS Executive Director Speaks on Twin Threats Facing Sri Lanka
28 February – 01 March 2019
Colombo, Sri Lanka
IPS was a co-host to the ‘Regional Conference on External Vulnerabilities in South Asia’, along with the World Bank, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and the University of Colombo, on 28 February – 01 March 2019.
IPS Executive Director, Dushni Weerakoon, observed that Sri Lanka faces immediate twin threats of rising external debt and a slowdown in growth as the country prepares to settle significant foreign debt dues in the next few years. Policy consistency and a coordinated approach to macroeconomic management is crucial to see through these challenges in what is expected to be an uncertain election year.
Dr. Weerakoon also chaired the session on ‘Empirical insights on the twin deficits in South Asia’ where IPS research on Sri Lanka’s Macroeconomic Challenges: A Tale of Two Deficits was presented for discussion.
