IORA Blue Economy Dialogue on Prospects of Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean

A conference on the “Prospects of Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean Rim” was held in India with the aim of fostering high-quality deliberations on various aspects of blue economy by the academicians, policy makers, diplomats and informed intelligentsia representing the Indian Ocean Rim countries and from other parts of the world. IPS Research Economist, Chatura Rodrigo made a presentation on “Blue Economy: Key Factors for Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Countries in Harnessing Benefits from Fisheries and Aquaculture”, where he highlighted the importance of the sustainability of the blue economy. Among the broad themes discussed at the conference are; Comprehensive Accounting Framework; Fisheries and Aquaculture; Renewable Ocean Energy; Ports, Shipping, Manufacturing and Other Sectors; and Sea-bed Exploration and Minerals. The conference also reiterated the importance of the countries working together in order to reap the benefits of a “blue economy”.
