International Conference on ‘Institutionalizing Regional Approaches to Migration Management in South Asia’

IPS, in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Colombo, organized an International Conference on ‘Institutionalizing Regional Approaches to Migration Management in South Asia’, at the Taj Samudra Hotel, on 25 November, 2011.

The objective of the conference was to discuss the role of existing regional consultative forums for managing migration in South Asia, and defining the role of the proposed South Asia Migration Commission (SAMC) in this consultative process. The conference included researchers on migration from the South Asian region, government officials, and participants from national and international agencies dealing with issues of migration.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Hon. Dilan Perera, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Government of Sri Lanka. Ms. Bettina Meier, Resident Representative, FES, delivered the Welcome Address. The Guest of Honour was Dr. Richard Danziger, Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration, (IOM), Sri Lanka. Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director, IPS, presented an overview of the objectives of the conference.
