National Consultation Workshop on Key Challenges and Opportunities for Food Security Policies in Sri Lanka
IPS together with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) conducted a national consultation workshop at the IPS Auditorium, on “Key Challenges and Opportunities for Food Security Policies in Sri Lanka”. The main aim of the two day event held on 16th and 17th July 2015, was to facilitate a dialogue between key stakeholders in order to identify key challenges and opportunities for food security in Sri Lanka and provide the basis for the formation of a successful food security policy framework for the country. This national workshop brought together different teams composed of professionals from agriculture, trade, health, finance, and nutrition sections from various Ministries, universities, private sector, NGOs and civil society.
Welcoming the participants, IPS Executive Director, Dr. Kelegama stressed the importance of a “holistic approach that promotes sustainable agriculture in order to improve existing food insecurity and to mitigate the future vulnerabilities of the people”. Addressing the gathering, Guest of Honour Mr. B. Wijayarathne, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture said that “the government is formulating a new agriculture policy which will address the four components of food security in order to create a fair standard of living for everyone without any discrimination”. Dr. Rohan Wijekoon, Director General, Department of Agriculture and Dr. P.K. Joshi, Director, IFPRI-South Asia also made informative presentations. One of the key highlights of the inauguration was signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between IFPRI and IPS for a collaborative programme in South Asia to strengthen research and capacity building.
Panel discussions took place on areas that are of importance to Food Security in Sri Lanka such as Current Food Security Situation of the Country, Ensuring Sustainable Food Production, Climate Change, Promoting Healthy Food Systems, Value Addition, Agribusiness and Market Access. Main speakers of the technical sessions were Dr. Athula Senaratne, IPS Research Fellow, Dr. Manoj Thibbotuwawa, IPS Research Economist, Dr. W.M.W. Weerakoon – Field Crop Research & Development Institute, Dr. Renuka Silva – Wayamba University and Dr. J. Amunugoda – Industrial Technology Institute.
