The research study examined whether the existing pension schemes in the country are able to provide adequate income support for all old persons in the country. The study finds that at present only 48 per cent of the 60 plus population in the country is receiving any pension. Of this, about 20 per cent of the 60 plus persons receives an adequate pension to keep them out of poverty, as they receive the Public Servant’s Pension. The benefit amounts received by others are not adequate to keep them out of poverty. Unless the government takes action to extend pension coverage and increase the benefit amounts of pensions, the old persons in the country will be left to the mercy of others and their savings for income support in old age.
