Highlighting the importance of Global Compact on Migration (GCM), IPS Research Fellow, Bilesha Weeraratne, recently noted that this mechanism offers the international community an opportunity to contribute to global migration governance.

The GCM approach focuses on thematic areas such as human rights, governance of migration, diaspora and development, smuggling and trafficking of migrants, irregular migration, and drivers of migration, including adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters and human-made crises.

Dr. Weeraratne was making a presentation titled ‘Global Compact on Migration: Way Forward for Sri Lanka’ at the Global Compact of Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration Workshop organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on 08 August 2017 at IPS.

She added that all stakeholders in the migration industry should contribute to national consultations to develop Sri Lanka’s submission to the Global Compact on Migration.
