Dr Manoj Thibbotuwawa Highlights the Importance of National Environment Policy

Citing the recent examples of the Xpress Pearl maritime disaster and the smog problem, IPS Research Fellow, Dr Manoj Thibbotuwawa, highlighted the importance of the new National Environment Policy (NEP) for Sri Lanka in addressing the various environmental challenges that the country faces. Dr Thibbotuwawa drew attention to the necessity of developing a proper coordination mechanism under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment for the implementation of the policy statements specified in the NEP. He delivered these remarks at the launch of the NEP and National Environment Action Plan (NEAP) for 2022 – 2030 at the Ministry of Environment on 19 December 2022.

Dr Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, inaugurated the workshop and Hon Naseer Ahamed, Minister of Environment delivered the keynote address at the event. Officials from the government, private sector, academia, NGOs and civil society participated in the event.
