Dr Bilesha Weeraratne Highlights Sri Lankan Migrant Worker Experiences During COVID-19

IPS Research Fellow Dr Bilesha Weeraratne contributed an article on ‘Migrant Workers and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from Sri Lankans Abroad’ to the recently published Slovenian journal ‘Dve Domovini’ (Two Homelands). In this Special Issue of the Journal on the theme of ‘COVID-19 and Migration’, Dr Weeraratne highlights the difficulties faced by migrant workers stranded overseas during the pandemic. Her analysis uses both qualitative and quantitative data collected from Sri Lankan migrant workers and shows mixed results in terms of employment outcomes and social and psychological experiences. Using the evidence from the experiences of Sri Lankan migrants, the article provides recommendations to improve their conditions. Read the full journal article HERE.
