Dr Bilesha Weeraratne Discusses Labour Migration Policies on TV1’s ‘The People’s Platform’
4 July 2022
Participating in ‘The People’s Platform’ live panel discussion telecast over Newsfirst – TV1, IPS Research Fellow Dr Bilesha Weeraratne discussed Sri Lanka’s labour migration policies. She emphasised that although policies are already in place to protect the rights of Sri Lankan migrant workers, many of them are not effectively enforced, as seen during the return and reintegration efforts of migrant workers during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Bilesha further explained that some policies like the Family Background Report (FBR) requirement did more harm than good as these policies largely did not consider the economic situation of females with children who wished to migrate. However, the recent relaxation of the policy is likely to encourage and increase female migrant worker departures.
Dr Bilesha pointed out that remittances from 2020 have gradually declined over the years due to several reasons. Therefore, Sri Lanka must increase migrant worker departures, but at the same time should also resolve the problems that deter them from sending remittances into the country.
