Dr Asanka Wijesinghe Discusses Economic Imperatives on TV1’s ‘The People’s Platform’

Participating in ‘The People’s Platform’ live panel discussion telecast over NewsFirst – TV1, IPS Research Fellow Dr Asanka Wijesinghe outlined measures to rationalise government expenditure and rebuild investor confidence. He emphasised that proper management of government-owned enterprises, streamlining spending on welfare programmes, and investing only in quality infrastructure will reduce the wastage of public revenue. Dr Wijesinghe pointed out that a stable macroeconomic environment with adequate foreign reserves and unrestricted raw material imports will increase investor confidence. He added that welfare spending on health and education should not be considered a waste as the return on the investments is higher in both sectors.
