07 May 2020
IPS Research Economist, Kithmina Hewage, was a panelist at a discussion on ‘Socioeconomic Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Developing Countries and the Role of South-South and Triangular Cooperation’, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), on the 07 May 2020.
In addition to discussing the macroeconomic impacts of the pandemic on the Sri Lankan economy, Mr. Hewage highlighted the vulnerability of nearly half a million Sri Lankans who live just above the poverty line. He also drew attention to the absence of a coordinated global response to minimise the economic cost of the current crisis, which could create an opportunity for greater South-South Cooperation to reshape a post-COVID 19 economic order.
