Dilani Hirimuthugodage Presents on GIs for Ceylon Golden Pineapple and Kolonna Pepper
28 February 2022
Dilani Hirimuthugodage, Research Economist at IPS made a presentation on ‘The Progress in Obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) System for Ceylon Golden Pineapple (CGP) and Kolonna Pepper (KP)’ at a discussion organised by the State Ministry for the Development of Minor Crops and Export Promotion for key industry stakeholders. During the presentation, Dilani stated that the main requirements to obtain the local GI certification – namely the Book of Specifications, GI Associations, and Internal and External Control Systems – were complete. However, Parliament must pass the Sui Generis law on the GI to make the local registration application. She also highlighted issues which need attention in the future such as international GI registration for CGP and KP, sustainability of GI associations, and linkage between stakeholders and other agencies. State Minister Hon. Janaka Wakkumbura, Secretaries and Directors of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Minor Crops and Export Promotion, Ministry of Plantation, Senior Officers of the Export Development Board, Department of Export Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), National Intellectual Property Office (NIPO), Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI), and stakeholders from the private sector as well as media personnel participated at the event held at the Water’s Edge in Battaramulla.
