Dilani Hirimuthugodage Highlights the Significance of a Geographical Indication System in Sri Lanka

Dilani Hirimuthugodage, Research Economist, IPS, highlighted the importance of a Geographical Indication (GI) system for Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector. She shared international best practices in her presentation on the “Geographical Indication (GI) System in Sri Lanka” at the training and awareness session conducted for the officers attached to the office of the Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture (Gampaha). Dilani underscored the economic and social benefits of a GI system for Sri Lanka. Specifically, she discussed the current status of the local GI application process of the “Ceylon Golden Pineapple”, a product selected from the Gampaha District for the application of a GI system. This initiative is part of the Technical Cooperation Project by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), aiming to establish a GI system in Sri Lanka.

The training session, organised by the Development of Minor Export Crops Plantation Division of the Ministry of Plantation Industries, brought together nearly one hundred agriculture officers in Gampaha District. The event took place at the Auditorium of the District Secretary’s Office in Gampaha.
