Dilani Hirimuthugodage Delivers the Guest Speech at the Training and Awareness Workshop on ‘Establishment of Geographical Indication (GI) System in Sri Lanka’

Dilani Hirimuthugodage, Research Economist at IPS delivered the guest speech at the training and awareness workshop on ‘Establishment of Geographical Indication (GI) System in Sri Lanka’. This hybrid event was organised by the Development of Minor Export Crops Plantation Division of the Ministry of Plantation Industries for the officers attached to the Provincial Director of Agriculture (Gampaha).

During her speech, Dilani emphasised the concept of GI, and its benefits to Sri Lanka, especially to the agriculture sector. She highlighted the present legal scenario on GI in Sri Lanka and the positive aspects of the new Intellectual Property (IP) Amendment Act No.8 of 2022. Dilani briefed the officers on the process of obtaining GI certification for ‘Ceylon Golden Pineapple’, a product which was selected for the application of a GI system through the Technical Cooperation Project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the establishment of GI system in Sri Lanka.
