Sri Lanka’s growing freelance economy continues to experience the effects of several gender disparities. Factors such as differences in earnings, access to projects, and client feedback greatly contribute towards these disparities.
This research explores gender disparities that shape opportunities and outcomes within the freelance sector of Sri Lanka. The aim of this study is to examine both the extent of the gender pay gap and the underlying factors that contribute to unequal outcomes. It will also analyse how these disparities affect women’s financial independence, job satisfaction, and long-term career prospects. By integrating quantitative evidence from online platforms with qualitative perspectives, the research will highlight structural and social barriers, and develop policy recommendations that foster inclusivity, equity, and fair access to opportunities.
