Sustainable Ecotourism for Conservation-based Development: The livelihood survey in the Southern Region

The IPS was commissioned by the World Bank to undertake a livelihood survey in the Southern Province, as a component of the World Bank Country Environment Analysis. The survey was based on peripheral villages of Yala National Park in the Hambantota District, which has been declared as the model environmental district by the Government. The broad areas covered through the survey include socio-demographic information, income and expenditure information, measures to account for resource dependencies, economic losses due to human elephant conflict, and perceptual and attitudinal questions related to the conflict and other environmental issues relevant to the study.
