Regional Workshop on Economic Globalization Statistics and Conference on Mapping Value Chains

IPS Research Officer, Harini Weerasekera, attended the Regional Workshop on Economic Globalization Statistics and made a presentation on Border Tax Evasion in Sri Lanka’ at the Conference on Mapping Value Chains, held at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta, Indonesia, on 13 – 15 June 2019.

The presentation was based on her paper titled ‘Tax Rates and Tax Evasion: An Empirical Investigation of Border Tax Evasion in Sri Lanka’, which estimates the extent of underreporting and mislabeling of imports taking place at Sri Lanka’s border.

The event was jointly organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) and brought together close to 100 statisticians and economic researchers from across the Asian region. The workshop aimed to build capacity on the use of multi-regional input-output (I-O) tables, while the conference provided a platform for researchers to present their work employing I-O techniques.
