The Poverty and Social Welfare Unit has gathered substantial amount of primary data related to poverty and microfinance at the household and divisional (Grama Niladari ) level.
- Household level data: The Microfinance Survey conducted in 2004 covered 1500 households from 17 districts of the country. Data on household income, expenditure, assets, economic activities, risks and vulnerabilities and details of credit and savings activities of the household are some of the information included in this dataset.
- Divisional level data: Village Resource Profiles for a sample of 50 G.N. Divisions were prepared in 2004. The database includes information on key economic activities in the area, infrastructure facilities (e.g., transportation, electricity and communication), health and education facilities, climatic conditions, factors of vulnerability and various microfinance institutions operating in the division.
Datasets and Surveys (in Progress)
- A household level survey on ‘outreach of microfinance services in Sri Lanka' is being conducted covering 3000 households from all the districts of the country. Information on credit, savings, insurance and other financial and non-financial services obtained from various financial institutions are some of the information included in this dataset.
- A survey covering the major microfinance providers in the country including banks (both commercial and development), cooperatives and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are being conducted to obtain information on various microfinance services including credit, savings and so-called ‘credit plus' services provided by these institutions.
