The primary strength of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is its talented, dedicated and hardworking staff.

Research Staff Vacancies
The Institute of Policy Studies provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to leading issues facing the nation as the IPS works closely with government, the private sector, donor agencies, NGOs and other research institutions. We provide an independent environment conducive to highly effective research and the professional growth of our staff. Given the international reach of the IPS and the nature of the work, many opportunities arise for research and research presentation abroad.
Requirements: Applicants should have a strong interest in policy-oriented research, and possess the following minimum requirements:
- A strong academic record with a degree in economics, or a closely-related field from an accredited university
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently within a team environment
Research Fellows (RF)
Applicants for senior research positions should have a proven track record in policy-oriented research, have their own innovative, independent research agenda, and possess leadership skills to guide a research team. A Research Fellow will typically possess a doctoral level degree. Candidates interested in developing a new Unit at IPS are strongly encouraged to apply.
Research Economists (RE)
Applicants for the position of Research Economist are expected to work closely with Research Fellows on a variety of ongoing studies, and also provide research guidance to junior economists. The recruited candidates will also be expected to undertake independent research. A typical candidate will possess a doctoral level degree or a masters level degree with several years of experience.
Research Officers (RO)
Applicants for the position of Research Officer are expected to work closely with senior researchers on a variety of ongoing studies. A Research Officer will typically possess a Masters level degree, or a Bachelors level degree with several years of experience.
Research Assistants (RA)
Applicants for the position of Research Assistant are expected to work closely with senior researchers on a variety of ongoing studies. A Research Assistant will typically possess a Bachelors level degree.
IPS Internship Programme
The IPS internship programme offers short-term attachments to currently enrolled students or recent graduates in economics or closely related fields. They provide an opportunity to work with a senior researcher on a specific research project, or to obtain a wider experience within a Research Unit. The positions are open to both Sri Lankans and foreign nationals with an interest in development issues. These positions are typically for 2-6 months, and are usually paid an allowance to cover local travelling expenses. Previous interns have used their positions and work experience at IPS towards degree requirements in their universities.
Visiting Scholar
Senior researchers from other institutions, both domestic and foreign, may be housed at the IPS on a part-time basis or full-time for a limited period, as long as the research agenda of the individual researcher is consistent with the research programme of the IPS.
Administrative Staff Vacancies
Vacancy for a Associate Database Manager
IPS is looking for a suitable candidate for the post of Associate Database Manager to support its research activities, data manipulation and archiving processes.
The ideal candidate should be able to provide technical support to researchers in cleaning and analyzing data, assist researchers to format/design layouts of questionnaires and databases, assist in coding and computerization of information obtained through questionnaires and to supervise data entry, maintain an inventory of reports, publications, datasets and supporting documentation.
The candidate should:
- Possess a Special Degree in statistics / Possess a degree with a significant component in Statistics
- Have practical experience in data analysis, including experience in the use of statistical packages (such as SAS, SPSS and STATA)
- Background of Computer Science education (Degree courses where there is a component of Computer Science at least up to second year level, Advanced / Higher diplomas in computing or equivalent professional qualifications)
- Experience in MS Access
- Have good communication and presentation skills in English
- Be self motivated, a self learner, and an excellent team player
Highly advantageous if the candidate possess:
- Knowledge in theoretical aspects of relational database management, analysis and design, Knowledge on Structure Query Language (SQL)
- Experience in VB and in creating front-ends with VB for Access databases
- Experience in designing interfaces for questionnaires, Designing and developing databases for questionnaires, Developing integrated systems for data entry, manipulation and processing
- Experience in MS SQL Server (or any other Database server) and in Windows 2000 Server or higher
- Experience in basic web development, HTML, Authoring tools such as MS FrontPage, Dreamweaver
- Demonstrated Leadership and Management skills
