The primary strength of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is its talented, dedicated and hardworking staff.

Recruitment of new staff is based on need, and occurs periodically throughout the year. Information about specific vacancies from individual Units of IPS will be placed on this site. However, even in the absence of a particular vacancy, dynamic, high-calibre individuals are encouraged to apply to join the IPS team.

Research Staff Vacancies

The Institute of Policy Studies provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to leading issues facing the nation as the IPS works closely with government, the private sector, donor agencies, NGOs and other research institutions. We provide an independent environment conducive to highly effective research and the professional growth of our staff. Given the international reach of the IPS and the nature of the work, many opportunities arise for research and research presentation abroad.

Requirements: Applicants should have a strong interest in policy-oriented research, and possess the following minimum requirements:

  • A strong academic record with a degree in economics, or a closely-related field from an accredited university
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
Research Fellows (RF)

Applicants for senior research positions should have a proven track record in policy-oriented research, have their own innovative, independent research agenda, and possess leadership skills to guide a research team. A Research Fellow will typically possess a doctoral level degree. Candidates interested in developing a new Unit at IPS are strongly encouraged to apply.

Research Economists (RE)

Applicants for the position of Research Economist are expected to work closely with Research Fellows on a variety of ongoing studies, and also provide research guidance to junior economists. The recruited candidates will also be expected to undertake independent research. A typical candidate will possess a doctoral level degree or a masters level degree with several years of experience.

Research Officers (RO)

Applicants for the position of Research Officer are expected to work closely with senior researchers on a variety of ongoing studies. A Research Officer will typically possess a Masters level degree, or a Bachelors level degree with several years of experience.

Research Assistants (RA)

Applicants for the position of Research Assistant are expected to work closely with senior researchers on a variety of ongoing studies. A Research Assistant will typically possess a Bachelors level degree.

IPS Internship Programme

The IPS internship programme offers short-term attachments to currently enrolled students or recent graduates in economics or closely related fields. They provide an opportunity to work with a senior researcher on a specific research project, or to obtain a wider experience within a Research Unit. The positions are open to both Sri Lankans and foreign nationals with an interest in development issues. These positions are typically for 2-6 months, and are usually paid an allowance to cover local travelling expenses. Previous interns have used their positions and work experience at IPS towards degree requirements in their universities.

Visiting Scholar

Senior researchers from other institutions, both domestic and foreign, may be housed at the IPS on a part-time basis or full-time for a limited period, as long as the research agenda of the individual researcher is consistent with the research programme of the IPS.

Administrative Staff Vacancies

Vacancy for a Database Manager

IPS is looking for a suitable candidate for the post of Database Manager for its Information Systems Unit.

The ideal candidate should be able to maintain an inventory of data sets and supporting documentation, provide technical support to researchers in cleaning and analyzing data, assist researchers to format/design layout of questionnaires and databases, and supervise data entry. Experience in MS Access is mandatory. Experience in VB and creating front-ends with VB for Access databases, designing interfaces for questionnaires is highly advantageous. Experience in MS SQL Server, knowledge in theoretical aspects of relational database management, analysis and design are essential.

The candidate should possess a university degree in related fields such as statistics, computer science or a degree with a significant component in computer science. Other qualifications looked for include proven experience in the use of statistical packages (such as SAS, SPSS, STATA), statistical analysis, database management (at least 2 years), and strong communication skills in English.
