Unveiling Portraits of Founder Governing Board Members of the IPS

Portraits of the Institute of Policy Studies’ (IPS) founder Governing Board members, viz; Dr. Gamani Corea (Chairman, IPS), Dr. Godfrey Gunatilleke, Prof. Budhadasa Hewavitarana, and Prof. W. D. Lakshman were officially unveiled at the IPS premises recently by Dr. Patricia Alailima—Director-General, Department of National Planning and ex-officio Governing Board Member of the IPS.

Dr Gamani Corea is an eminent Economist whose contribution to Sri Lanka’s economy and policy is well known, as is his contribution to international economic affairs in the UNCTAD, Non-Aligned Movement, South Centre, and many other institutions. Dr. Godfrey Gunatilleke, former chairman of the Marga Institute is a leading social scientist in Sri Lanka, Professor Buddhadasa Hewavitharana, Emeritus Professor of Economics, University of Peradeniya; and Professor W.D. Lakshman, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo and Professor of Economics of the University of Colombo are leading members of the Economic profession in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Alailima pointed out in her speech that although governments have changed twice since the inception of the Institute of Policy Studies in 1990 as an independent policy research institution, this did not hinder the functioning of the Governing Board of the Institute—an indication of the recognition and respect these individuals command in Sri Lankan society.

Dr. Alailima went on to say that government officials and the technocrats alike have appreciated the independent viewpoints presented by the IPS. She stated that it is due to this recognition that the current Prime Minister—Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe—brought the IPS under his Ministry—the Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation. The government has obtained the services of the Institute for kick-starting the National Operations Room, and the Policy Development Committees.

The official unveiling was followed by a cocktail which provided an opportunity for IPS staff to meet and interact with the Institute’s Governing Board members.
