“Population will decline after 2040”

The Sunday Times, 17 June, 2007 - Sri Lanka’s population will decline after 2040, primarily due to a significantly low level of fertility, a think-tank has warned. Research by the Institute of Policy Studies has revealed that Sri Lanka’s population which is around 20 million now will reach 20.1 million by 2011 and could attain its peak of 21.1 million in 2031.

‘WTO has brought transparency into int’l trading”

Morning Leader, 18 April, 2007 - Sri Lanka unlike some other countries haven’t totally dismissed the World Trade Organisation (WTO) "as we feel that it is an important organisation and that bilateral and regional tracks are the second best approach, the first best approach being the multilateral approach, despite its limitations." Dr. Saman Kelegama, a senior economist, speaking to reporters about the WTO at an event organized by the Commerce Department recently said that Sri Lanka feels that the WTO has many positive features and WTO talks should be revived at the earliest, "especially because we are a small player in the global trade."

Lanka Business Online, 24 March, 2007 - Sri Lanka and India are to sign 'Mutual Recognition Agreements', making it easier for professionals to cross borders when a new services trade agreement takes effect this year. "Sri Lanka is now making arrangements for professional bodies to sign Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA's) with their counterparts," Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of think tank, the Institute of Policy Studies, said Thursday.

“Institute of Policy Studies gets a new look”

Daily Mirror, 28 December, 2006 - President, Mahinda Rajapaksa has reconstituted the Board of Governors of the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS). Prof. Buddhadasa Hewavitharana, Emeritus Professor of Economics, University of Peradeniya who has been a founder member of the IPS since it was established in 1989 has been appointed as the Chairman of the new Board. He succeeds Dr. Gamani Corea, who was the Founder Chairman of the IPS.

“Taking S. Asia forward”

“Sri Lanka-German Economic Relations”

Daily News, 3 October, 2003 - Sri Lanka and German economic relations predate the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1953. German merchants established themselves in Sri Lanka as far back as 1850 but it was only in the 20th century that economic relations took a positive and significant turn, strengthened by the excellent bilateral relations that the two countries have built and sustained over the years.
