South Asia Network of Economic Research Institutes (SANEI)

SANEI is a regional initiative to foster networking among economic research institutes in South Asia. Initiated in June 1998, the network seeks to establish strong research inter-linkages among diverse economic research institutes in the region.
During its fourth phase of research grants, IPS and the Institute for Policy Research and Development (IPRAD), Nepal jointly conducted a study on “Monetary Cooperation in South Asia” funded by SANEI.

The Asian Development Bank Institute is a development think-tank and high level training centre based in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1997, the key objectives of the ADBI are to identify effective development strategies and capacity improvements in developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The IPS has initiated joint work with the ADBI on issues related to post-tsunami economic recovery in Sri Lanka. The first phase of the project saw the publication of an ADBI Working Paper titled “Post-Tsunami Recovery: Issues and Challenges in Sri Lanka” in January 2006. The second phase of joint collaboration will see the extension of tsunami related work for a comparative study covering Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand.

The IPS has developed collaborative links with Dr. Jayatilleke Bandara, Associate Professor, Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics, Griffith University, Australia, to develop an economy-wide model to analyse policy issues. As an initial step, collaborative efforts will be directed at compiling an input-output (I-O database) for the Sri Lankan economy for the year 2000.

The Asian Economics Centre brings together academic staff with research interests in economic issues facing the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and broader issues of global economic development.
The IPS has had close collaborative links with Dr. Sisira Jayasuriya, Director, Asian Economics Centre. Dr. Jayasuriya served as Visiting Professor, IPS in 2002. Joint collaborative work has included studies on the “Economic Cost of the War in Sri Lanka”, “Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Integration in the SAARC Region”, “Monetary Cooperation in South Asia” and “Post-Tsunami Recovery: Issues and Challenges in Sri Lanka”.
