Youth Employment Network (YEN)

The Youth Employment Network in Sri Lanka serves as a coordination and information centre for the Network consisting of the Government, employers' and workers' organizations, other non-governmental organizations and youth organizations. The YEN Secretariat was initially placed under the National Planning Dept of the Ministry of Planning within the government, then, shifted to the Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment (MOLRFE). However, after the general election in April 2004, it has been placed under the Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education (MOSDVTE). After the presidential elections in November 2005 the YEN secretariat is now hosted in the Ministry for Skills Development and Public Enterprise Reforms.

The IPS conducted background research and participated in working group discussions in the preparation of a National Action Plan for Youth Employment, coordinated by the Youth Employment Network (YEN).

JobsNet is part of the Employment Services Delivery Network, identified in the National Employment Policy for Sri Lanka . JobsNet is an interface between the key stakeholders in the employment and labour market - Jobseekers, Employers and Training Institutions.

The Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP)

PEP Research Network brings together and provides technical and financial support to developing country researchers working to reduce poverty.

The objectives of the PEP network are to:

  • Better understand the causes and consequences of poverty.
  • Propose alternative/accompanying policies to reduce poverty.
  • Improve the monitoring and measurement of poverty.
  • Develop local research (and training) capacity in these areas.
  • Develop new concepts and methodologies through fundamental research.

The IPS is currently conducting a study on “ Will School Level Decision Making Improve Access to Better Education for the Poor in Sri Lanka? ”, funded by the PEP network.

World Bank

The World Bank provides financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Its main mission is reducing poverty.

The IPS has got involved with the World Bank in many research projects. The recent involvements of the Labour, Employment and Human Resource Development Unit with the World Bank include collaborative research on “Sri Lanka: Strengthening Social Protection” and “Ageing in Sri Lanka” projects.
