Kithmina Hewage Discusses Opportunities and Challenges in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Speaking on Biz1st ‘Infocus’ programme, broadcast over TV1 on 09 July 2019, IPS Research Officer, Kithmina Hewage, discussed the challenges and opportunities presented in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). He highlighted that disruption of the labour market due to human capital replacement or the ‘robotisation’ of jobs is one of the biggest issues that developing countries like Sri Lanka will have to face in the 4IR era. However, it would also create new occupations and prospects in the labour market. In order to leverage these opportunities, Sri Lanka will need to address several structural issues, primarily in the country’s education system, Mr. Hewage noted.
