Factors Affecting the Repayment Performance of Loans Granted by Microfinance Institutions in Sri Lanka

The University of Griffith, Brisbane, Australia was conducting a study on microfinance in the Asia Pacific region, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Sri Lanka. The survey in Sri Lanka was carried out by the IPS. The objective was to understanding the factors affecting the repayment performance of loans granted by the micro financing institutions (MFIs) in the Asia Pacific region. The study consisted of two parts. The first part involved interviewing the managers who were familiar with the loan appraisal and disbursement process at each selected MFI. The second part involved development of a database with loan repayment information of loan clients of the selected MFIs at community level institutions (e.g., Community Based Organization/Society/cluster level).
