IPS Research Fellow and Head of Migration and Urbanization research, Bilesha Weeraratne, highlighted the importance of balancing the emphasis on skilled labour migration, with the demand for skilled labour in the local labour market in Sri Lanka. She also pointed out the need to provide better alternative employment and livelihood opportunities for less skilled workers in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Weeraratne was speaking as a panelist at the National Multi-sector Policy Forum on Labour Migration, held on 02 October 2018, at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

The forum, organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO), aimed at building national consensus on updating the National Labour Migration Policy in terms of its operational guidelines, focus areas, and strategies and carving out a way forward for the National Action Plan.
